# Hard Truths

Uncomfortable observations about tech, power and what we broke along the way. Not all of it is certain, and the label on each post says how sure I am.

## [A Backbone for the Critical Thinkers](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/backbone-for-critical-thinkers)

In September I was in Preveza, and I went to see the ruins of Nicopolis, the city Octavian founded to celebrate his win at Actium. Walking around it I was thinking about dictators, and I started writing notes on what a good dictator would look like, then on how a society would have to be structured so it didn't need one.

## [The Age That Needs Critical Thinkers](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/age-that-needs-critical-thinkers)

On a tour of Hohenschwangau I was arguing on Reddit that LLMs are the best abstraction layer we've built, and I realised critical thinking is something I take for granted. Groupthink kept us alive for most of our history, and now it's becoming a liability.

## [Breaking Free](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/breaking-free)

At 2am in an aparthotel lobby in Neu-Ulm, three guys who work in AI were astonished that you can build your own forecast from open data, so this is how I did it. The price of bitcoin now comes from the exchanges' own tickers instead of CoinGecko, the weather from the weather centres' model files decoded on my box in London, and the map I built from scratch, which started as country shapes for my photos and is now 79 GB of OpenStreetMap with routing. Each one has a diagram, and none of it needed a team, so you can do the same with whatever you're tired of asking for.

## [Caffeine and Spite](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/caffeine-and-spite)

An AskReddit thread asked millennials how they're holding up, and most of the answers sounded like my own friends. Broke on the best salaries we've had, priced out of houses our parents bought on three and a half years of earnings, and running on caffeine and spite. Then the numbers, which say the world is better than when we were born, the elephant curve that says why it doesn't feel like it, and the tide of globalisation going out, which will hurt before it pays. And why the most hopeful line in the thread came from a man with $40 in the bank.

## [What the Box Does Now, and What Each Part Costs](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/what-the-box-does-now)

Two mornings in September the Box Status panel was right and the box was wrong, and between them most of the box was rebuilt, so this is the dev update. One QR enrols the phone, with the box as its own CA and a 503 for everyone else. The volume key is sealed to the TPM and released by a PIN typed in the app. Then everything the box does with that trust, 30,408 photos captioned and tagged, a trail drawn along the streets, a memory of each day, the web read by the phone, Greek on the lock screen, each part ending with what it costs, plus what broke and what is still not done.

## [The Expensive Part Was Never the AI](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/the-expensive-part)

Cristina caught me playing between test runs, called it procrastinating, and bet that moving my gaming eGPU to the NAS would speed the project up. She was right on both counts. The benchmark, the zero-downtime migration, the £1,130 tower, and why a good model on a £500 card you own beats a fee that collects twice, in money and in everything you type. The overnight memory layer from How Memory Gets Made now fits the night it was designed for.

## [A Ghost Should Not Possess](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/should-not-possess)

The same manipulation patterns that built the slot machine, the cult, and the social media feed are now aimed at you through your AI, and someone gets paid each time one lands. A catalogue of twenty-eight, from gaslighting to prosthetic grief, each entry the spec for a detector ghost.shadowd runs against the world on your behalf. The cognitive self is the layer the extraction industry is reaching for, and this is the toolkit for refusing to hand it over.

## [An Index Is Not a Person](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/index-not-a-person)

I've been ignoring the Energy Score on my Samsung watch since December. On why wellness scores borrow the shape of a regulated index without any of the obligations, what CCCAGG got right that Readiness and Body Battery do not, and the architectural commitment that makes a ghost non-comparative by construction, so the number it shows you is about you and not about your bucket.

## [The Integration Tax](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/integration-tax)

The hidden cost of tying your stack to fifty different APIs. On why we pay rent for our own data, the fragility of modern infrastructure, and how decoupling is the only way out.

## [What the Ghost Owes the People It Overhears](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/overhears)

Cristina said at the deli in Assisi that surely you can't just record other people and call it private software. On the terms-of-service dodge the industry is using, the criminal statutes in Germany and France that make ambient capture an offence at the moment of listening, and the architecture that destroys the audio at transcription. First post on ghost.voiced, the daemon that forgets the sound.

## [Day One](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/day-one)

Cristina told me at lunch that Gemini already knew her and she was not sitting through a multi-week ramp for my new daemon. I offered a personality test. She said too pigeonhole-y. On why no onboarding form belongs on install day, why Trello and Linear at $1.25 billion both got this right without one, and why a good version of you is going to feel creepy.

## [Before You Ask](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/before-you-ask)

My pilot friend Ionuț told me his First Officer cued him on the radio lines before he stalled on them, on his first commercial flights. On why RAG cannot hold a lifetime, what the brain does that RAG does not, and the four mechanisms behind ghost.cued, the daemon that reads the moment rather than waiting for a query.

## [The Bureaucracy Trap](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/the-bureaucracy-trap)

A trail in Abruzzo the morning the EU border system rolled out, a 22% funding cut signed by the people who run the place, and the pattern that sinks every big human project. Rome, Thatcher, DOGE, Milei. The chainsaw moment that always shows up when you defer the surgery for forty years.

## [How Memory Gets Made](https://www.localghost.ai/hard-truths/how-memory-gets-made)

Cristina and I stood in front of a restaurant in Milan we had not been to in fourteen years. One of us recognised the door. One of us had no memory of the place. On what your brain keeps, what it releases while you sleep, and why a memory layer worth building is a companion to the brain.

How to Build a Critic Worth Listening To
The technique that helps you find the right answer on your own is the same technique that, in different hands, walks you to the wrong one and lets you keep believing it was your idea. A follow-up to the dictator brain post, with help from a friend and a colleague who showed me what asking questions looks like when it's done well.

The Honeypot Under Your Desk
Cristina asked what would happen if someone stole the box. A thief can't make you type your password, a person with a wrench can, and the most useful tool you own becomes the worst thing to surrender the moment someone with legal authority is standing in front of you. First post on ghost.secd, the multi-PIN architecture, the purge, and the room with the false wall.

The Model Trap
Two years of personal context, gone because a company made a decision I disagreed with and no export button existed for the understanding the model had built. On model lock-in as the new enshittification, why local open-weight models are good enough, and the behavioural test suite we're building so you never have to trust a model swap again.
